Leadership Platform

Reflection:
My Leadership Platform continues to be a work in progress.  As I read through this Leadership Platform now, I realize that my beliefs have evolved beyond what is even included in this paper.  What I believe about Leadership is that it is an ever-evolving role.  As new experiences and opportunities present themselves, what we value and believe may be altered somewhat.  I think about the scholars of yesterday who once stood upon the "fact" that the world was flat.  Had no one ever challenged that belief, their "truth" may have never changed.  I know that's a bit out of the box, but the bottom line is that we have to be willing to "question" what we believe.  One can have both the conviction of their beliefs and also be open minded to accept new ways of thinking and growing.
So ... included in this paper, you will find what I like to call my "pillars" of belief.  These are the ideas that I believe are paramount to having an effective leader.  It is my stance that an effective leader must:
  • make decisions that are in the best interest of the students, even if the decision is not a popular one.
  • not tolerate excuses for why students and staff alike are not achieving or living up to a level of excellence every day.
  • recognize differences and embrace the assets of our differences and be able to instill this same philosophy into their staff.
  • have a clearly articulated and understood vision that they live.
As I reflect on these "pillars" I recognize they are not all encompassing.  I left out something that is very near to me and that I feel as though I live every day.  This idea even accompanies my signature at the bottom of every email.  The idea of having high expectations.  Beneath my signature is the phrase "Have high expectations because no one rises to low ones."  I think this a novel concept and can't believe that I wouldn't include it in this in my original version of my leadership platform.  I guess I now have a new jumping off point for my next revision of this Leadership Platform.
